OKEAN-O Spacecraft (removed from service)

Mission Objective
Spacecraft is designed for an operational and all-weather acquisition of data on the World Ocean and land surface conditions.

Tasks to be fulfilled:
Monitoring the Arctic and Antarctic ice conditions: mapping the boundaries of different thick ice floes, detecting large ice leads, areas of higher wind-driven waves resulted from hazardous natural phenomena, an operational detection of fishery promising regions, detecting sea-polluted areas.

Consumers:
Federal and governmental services organizations (Rosgidromet, Minmorflot, and others) and consumers on vessels at sea as well.

Special Features:
Onboard instruments enable comprehensive simultaneous research in visible, infrared, and microwave regions as well as simultaneous observations (space — Earth) using the equipment designed for data acquisition from ground stations. Two side-looking radars (RLSBO) with right- and left-side looking provide a full coverage of the Earth’s surface with radar imagery. With one spacecraft in orbit the entire water surface of the Russian Arctic Zone is imaged for 3-5 days.
