METEOR-M1 – 4 Years in Orbit. / September 19, 2013 /

On 17 September 2009, the Russian METEOR-M1 spacecraft was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome. The data acquired is designed for both hydrometeorological purposes (MSU-MR equipment) and environmental monitoring (KMSS equipment).

During its operation, 657 on-board target equipment programs have been developed and realized, and 13663 data receiving sessions have been made by the ROSCOSMOS’s and ROSHYDROMET’s ground stations. During the spacecraft operation, 5073 requests for the KMSS data acquisition have been processed; the MSU-MR imaging is on the request-free and continuous mode basis.

The main customers of remote sensing data are the following organizations of the Russian Ministries and Departments:
— Ministry of Defense,
— Ministry of Education and Science,
— Ministry of Civil Defense and Emergencies,
— Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment,
— Ministry of Agriculture,
— Ministry of Transport,
— Ministry of Economic Development,
— Russian Academy of Sciences,
— Executive bodies of the Russian Federal constituent regions.

By the consumers’ requests, a multiple coverage of the Russian Federation territory with imagery data have been made:
— By the MSU-MR data – more than 19 billion sq. km
— By the KMSS data – more than 450 million sq. km

In 2014, the METEOR-M2 spacecraft equipped with the similar imaging instruments is scheduled for launch.
A joint operation of two METEOR-3M series satellites will allow the Russian Federation territory to be imaged with less than 2 day revisit period.
