Delegation of Russian Space Agency Taking Part in Meeting of International Group on Earth Observations. / January 16, 2014 /















The 10th Plenary Session of Group on Earth Observations (GEO) which is coordinating efforts to build a Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) was opened on 14 January in Geneva, Switzerland.

GEO consists of 87 countries and 61 intergovernmental, international, and regional organizations with a mandate in Earth observation or related issues.

The Russian delegation comprises representatives of ROSCOSMOS, ROSHYDROMET, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Russian Academy of Sciences, and Rosstandart as well as representatives from those organizations and enterprises engaged in Earth observations (ROSCOSMOS Operator of remote sensing facilities – NTs OMZ of JSC „Russian Space Systems“, NITs Planeta etc).

The participation of the Russian experts in GEO activity will enable an increased efficiency of processing, use, and application of the Earth observations from space, aviation, and ground observing facilities as well as provision of the Russian consumers with updated and qualitative information for addressing the tasks in the following area:

  • Reducing loss of life and property from natural and human-induced disasters,
  • Understanding environmental factors affecting human health and well-being,
  • Improving the management of energy resources,
  • Understanding, assessing, predicting, mitigating, and adapting to climate variability and change,
  • Improving water resource management through better understanding of the water cycle,
  • Improving weather information, forecasting and warning,
  • Improving the management and protection of terrestrial, coastal and marine ecosystems,
  • Supporting sustainable agriculture and combating desertification,
  • Understanding, monitoring and conserving biodiversity, and
  • Improving the quality of map products.

The GEO meeting events will be finished by the Ministerial Summit to be held on 17 January.
