System GLONASS is tested in Arctic regions during polar expedition.. / October 7, 2010 /

The Arctic expedition on station disembarkation «Northern pole-38» led by the special representative of the President of the Russian Federation on the international cooperation in Arctic regions and Antarctic Arthur Tchilingarov has spent on Tuesday on island to the Visa a binding of coordinates for the Russian system of satellite positioning GLONASS, the correspondent of RIA Novosti news agency from a board of nuclear ice breaker «Russia» transfers.

Nuclear ice breaker «Russia» left on October, 2nd Murmansk port to Arctic regions where from its board drifting station «joint venture-38» on which 15 polar explorers about one year will study ocean, ice and atmosphere in the Arctic region, which crucial for weather and a climate of all planet will be landed on ice.

During a binding of coordinates instruments of companions on that point for which width, the longitude and excess are above sea level known have been read. For updating the reference point (a strong point of a geodetic network with known exact coordinates) on island to the Visa in Kara sea was used. The helicopter from the ice breaker delivered geodesists to island where the stationary polar station with resident population is located, and for two hours procedure has been finished.

Deputy head of expedition, the chief of department of polar and sea researches of Federal Hydrometereology and Environmental Monitoring Service Ilya Jagubov accompanying disembarkation, has explained, how there is a binding of coordinates: «Over a reference point we„ catch „the companion, we compare this data with known and thus we receive an error which we inform developers and those who operates this system».

«This monitoring exists not only in Arctic regions, the same works are conducted and in Antarctic. We try to help to modify to developers system GLONASS. Soon on each Russian vessel, any transport where it is necessary — up to cars — the domestic navigating system» will be established, — he has added.

The representative of Federal Hydrometereology and Environmental Monitoring Service has underlined that «this system guarantees safety of the state and independence of any activity».

«Coordinates are necessary for start, for calculation of orbits, for strategic targets. Uniqueness of supervision on island to the Visa that is 79 width, observers here happen very seldom, therefore so it was important to use this case», — he has told.
