GLONASS System Replenished with GLONASS-K Satellite

On 1 December 2014 at 00:52 Moscow Time, the Soyuz 2-1B rocket with the Fregat upper stage and GLONASS-K satellite was launched from Pad 43 of the Plesetsk State Test Cosmodrome of the Russian Ministry of Defense. The loft was jointly carried out by the Russian Ministry of Defense and Rocket and Space Industry specialist teams.

In accordance with the flight profile, GLONASS-K (built by Reshetnev Information Satellite Systems, Zheleznogorsk) was delivered to its target orbit and taken under control. GLONASS-K will replenish the operative GLONASS domestic global navigation satellite constellation.

GLONASS is a dual-purpose system designed for solving tasks to the benefit of the Russian Ministry of Defense and civil customers. Both Russian and foreign customers have a free and unlimited access to the civil navigation signals from the GLONASS global positioning satellite system.

GLONASS-K is a new GLONASS system spacecraft of third generation of home navigation satellites. As compared with the previous generation satellites, GLONASS-K has the 10-year lifespan (instead of GLONASS-M 7 years), reduced mass (935kg instead of 1415kg), and code division of navigation signal using the L3-band broadcasting. Moreover, the satellite carries the equipment of the international COSPAS-SARSAT Search and Rescue System.

Soyuz-2.1B was built by GNPRKTs „TsSKB-Progress“ (Samara).

Fregat upper stage is developed by Lavochkin Research & Production Association within the framework of the Federal Space Program of Russia and tasked with putting into orbit different spacecraft as part of modernized and existing carrier rockets of R-7A type. The upper stage allows for the carrier rocket energy and operation characteristics to be improved significantly. It makes it possible to launch spacecraft to almost any target orbits of the Earth and interplanetary trajectories as well.
