Unique Test Chamber Developed for Observatory Millimetron

The experts from Reshetnev Information Satellite Systems developed a new experimental facility – vacuum test chamber — for the Millimetron Space Observatory.

This chamber is designed for thermal vacuum testing of those materials which will be part of space radio telescope design. The existing experimental base allows the cooling of elements to the temperature of liquid nitrogen – 196°Ñ below zero which is insufficient to simulate the environment closely approximated to space. The chamber will enable the designers of the new telescope to expose the Space Observatory elements to extreme thermal loading on earth. A high fail-safety at ultralow temperature is one of the most important requirements for the Millimetron functionality.

The chamber provides the conditions of both high vacuum and cooling to extremely low temperatures – minus 268.5°Ñ using cryorefrigerators. A deep freezing of the observatory elements will prevent from of spacecraft equipment thermal noises and distortion of signals from deep space objects of interest.

The testing set of 0.6 cubic meters in volume is manufactures by the Reshetnev Company’s NPO PM – MKB.

Schwabe Holding, part of the Rostech State Corporation, manufactured the first experimental matrix of astrositall upon the order of Astrospace Center of Physical Institute of RAS to be used for producing the panels for the 10-m reflecting mirror of the Millimetron Space Observatory telescope.

The astrositall matrix manufactured by the Schwabe Holding – Lytkarino Optical Glass Factory, is a 1400-mm segment. In future, the reflecting mirror of the Millimetron Space Observatory telescope will be constructed on the basis of the astrositall precision matrices using special carbon plastic elements.

The project Millimetron

Millimetron is a millimeter and IR space observatory with a 10 meter telescope. It is designed to research star and planet formation of our Galaxy. The telescope is expected to operate both as a single telescope and in combination with the ground Earth-Space telescopes.
