Operations and experiments on the International Space Station August 31, 2011

August 31, including the obligatory daily activities of Russian cosmonauts Andrei Borisenko, Alexander Samokutyaev and Sergei Volkov will conduct the fit-suit «Centaur», a training session on the descent in the «Soyuz TMA-21».

Russian astronauts scheduled for the program of scientific experiments.

Investigation of the physical conditions in space orbiting the Earth:
study the dynamics of the radiation environment on the flight path and in ISS compartments, and dose accumulation in the anthropomorphic phantom, placed inside the station («Matryoshka-R»).

Space biotechnology:
study of the correlation between the change in genetic properties, the productivity of recombinant strains in microgravity and the effects on them of heavy charged cosmic ray particles («Biotrack»);
determine the effect of exposure to conditions of orbital flight on the growth, genetic and physiological characteristics of the producer strain lactol («lactol»);
study of the effects of space flight on bacteriophages («bacteriophage»);
to study the effect of microgravity on the solubility of calcium phosphates in the water («Calcium»);
to study the characteristics of a cell culture of ginseng and other crops in order to identify opportunities to increase their biological activity («Ginseng-2»).

Biomedical research:
study of growth and development of higher plants, as well as the development of the technology of their cultivation in microgravity («Plants-2»);
study the influence of space factors on the state of the systems’ micro-organisms — substrates "as applied to the problem of ecological safety of space technology and planetary quarantine («Biorisk»);
investigation of the physiological functions of the body-contact method during sleep during long-duration space flight («Sonokard»);
control study group activity of the crew during space flight («Interactions»).

Geophysics and near-Earth space:
Monitoring seismic effects — bursts of high energy particles in near-Earth space («Splash»);
study of atmospheric gamma bursts and optical radiation in terms of thunderstorm activity («Lightning-Gamma»).

Remote sensing:
study of the characteristics of the underlying surface, ocean and atmosphere («microwave radiometry»);
mining research methodology for determining the amount of carbon dioxide and methane in the atmosphere of the Earth from the ISS («Mermaid»).

Medical examination:
measurement of body weight and exercise at the impact of negative pressure in the lower body.

The ISS crew is working 28-second long expedition in the Russian Federal Space Agency cosmonaut commander Andrei Borisenko, flight engineers and Samokutyaeva Alexander Sergei Volkov (Roscosmos), Ronald Garan and Michael Fossum (NASA), Satoshi Furukawa (JAXA).
