Appearance of PMTS. Illustration from RSC Energia. Testing Russia's new spacecraft is scheduled for 2015

The first tests of the new Russia’s unmanned spacecraft will held in 2015. Tests of the ship with the pilots on board are scheduled for 2018. Such figures led Deputy General Designer of RSC «Energia» chief designer of manned systems Nikolai Bryukhanov in an article in the weekly «Industry».

New manned spacecraft’s temporary name is perspective manned transport system (PMTS). Furthermore, information appeared in the press that the ship will be named «Rus». Development PMTS leads RCM «Energy», which won the right through a competition announced by Roskosmos in 2009. Detailed history of the contest that prompted many rumors, is described here.

The new spacecraft to replace the «Souz». It’s expected to be partially reusable, and the maximum number of crew members PMTS is six person. The ship will be able to fly to Earth orbit, to deliver beyond Earth and return back loads weighing up to 500 kilograms. In the case of an unmanned cargo ship’s weight can be increased. In addition, the PMTS will be adapted for flights to the Moon (in this case the size of the crew for four people). The launch is planned to implement from the Baikonur East. Its construction is scheduled to begin in the Amur region in 2011-2012.
