South Korea called the cause of a failed satellite launch

According to Korean experts, the machine did not go into the target orbit because of the failure at relieving one of the two head fairings. The first dome was dropped at a given moment — after 260 seconds after launch, while the second remained connected with the second stage carrier rocket KSLV-1 (Korea Space Launch Vehicle-1). Mass of the fairing (300 kilograms) in three times the mass of the satellite, so the power booster rocket not enough to lift a satellite into planned orbit.

The presence of extra weight led to the satellite and the second stage of the launch vehicle deviated from the predetermined trajectory. Instead of moving along the earth’s surface, they began to move away from Earth. Office of the satellite from the second stage occurred at an altitude of 327 kilometers. Later apparatus reached an altitude of 387 kilometers. The planned height of the satellite’s orbit is 302 kilometers.

Representatives of South Korea’s space agency believes that the satellite again later changed the direction of motion, since its speed was not sufficient to remain in orbit. The Minister said that, most likely, STSAT-2 was burned during the flight through the atmosphere. Currently, Korean experts are looking for the remains of the apparatus.

Launch vehicle KSLV-1 was developed in collaboration with specialists from Russia SPC Khrunichev. In the case of an accident during launch of a missile Russia is obliged to assist with the creation of Korea «duplicate». Unnamed sources referred to by the agency, noted that the SPC Khrunichev take part in the creation of new missiles only if failure occurs due to damage Russia’s details. Official statement on this issue on the Korean side did not. On Friday, August 28, to be held the first meeting of a special commission to investigate the circumstances of what happened.

The launch vehicle KSLV-1 was held Aug. 25 from the Baikonur space center in «Naro». According to CNN, it was the eighth attempt in South Korea to launch into orbit. The first date was still scheduled for 2002. Satellite STSAT-2 (Science and Technology Satellite-2) was designed to monitor the state of the atmosphere and oceans.
