The breakdown on the orbit delayed the launching of GLONASS satellites

Run three satellites of the GLONASS system, scheduled for late September, has been postponed at least a month, Interfax reports with reference to the statement by head of Federal Space Agency Anatoly Perminov.

According to him, one of the satellites GLONASS-M, launched into orbit earlier, broke, and the reason for failure is not yet known.

«While the working group did not report on due to a malfunction, will not start», — Perminov said, adding: «For a month, I think, will understand.»

Head of Federal Space Agency at the same time stressed that his agency still plans to the end of 2009 to commission a six-satellite system.

Was assumed that the carrier rocket Proton-M "will bring into orbit three satellites of the GLONASS system on September 25.

GLONASS was conceived as Russia’s equivalent of the American Global Positioning System — GPS.

Creation of this system began in the 80-ies of the last century. It is planned that by 2012 the number of groups reaches 22 vehicles that will allow the signal coverage throughout the globe.
